Richard A. Ammons

Richard has 32 years of experience as a higher education advancement professional. His strategic thinking, thoughtful leadership and extensive success in fundraising provide tremendous value in his work with colleges and universities across the country as a senior consultant and principal for leading global advancement consultancy, Marts & Lundy.

From 2010 to 2012 Richard served as Associate Dean for The Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. Leading the fundraising and alumni relations team he reversed a multi-year downward trend in fundraising and doubled the previous year’s results in each of his two years. His team raised more than $35 million in new commitments during the quiet phase of the recently announced campaign.

Prior to his work at Duke, Richard served for seven years as Vice President for Development at Colby College. He worked as the chief advancement officer for the College’s fundraising and alumni relations activities, managing a staff of 43 and leading the College’s $370 million comprehensive campaign. In addition, he managed the College’s communications activities, including its integrated marketing initiative, from 2003-2007.

For eight years Richard was the Vice President for College Advancement at Macalester College. There, he provided strategic leadership for the College’s advancement activities, broadening outreach to alumni globally and raising $75 million, including $57 million in campaign dollars.

During his seven years as Vice President for Development at Morehouse College, he led the development division, which raised in excess of $5 million in private support per year. He managed a staff of 12 in areas of alumni giving, corporate and foundation relations, government support and publications.

Richard served as Director of Development for the Paul Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at The Johns Hopkins University. There, he managed the $40 million, five-year campaign for SAIS as part of The Johns Hopkins Institutions’ $450 million campaign. He coordinated the activities of four professional staff and a full range of development activities including corporate, foundation, alumni, government and planned giving activities.

Richard is a graduate of Amherst College and received his MBA from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.

Richard is a former member of the Board of Trustees for the Tilton School, the Board of the General Theological Seminary and the Board of Directors for Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE)
